The ice Festival in Alto Adige
Val Senales, a well known winter resort in the Alto Adige region (South Tirol), is drawing flocks of visitors to its unique annual Ice Festival. Every Sunday till the 30th March, the Ice Music Ensemble gives concerts under the soaring dome of a cathedral tunnelled out of the frozen side of a glacier. However, the most fascinating part of the Festival is the instruments the musicians play: the violins, guitars, flutes and percussion instruments are all carved out of solid ice, masterpieces created by American sculptor Tim Linhart, who exhibited his first ice instrument in 1998 at the Hyatt Regency Beaver Creek in Colorado (USA). This year, Linhart is presenting a new type of ice violincello, designed with the help of leading Italian musician and composer Giovanni Collima.
Concerts are held twice daily on Sundays, at 11 am and 2 pm. Entrance is free.
