Rome port tops in Med
The port of Civitavecchia, 72 kms north of Rome, has overtaken Spain’s Barcellona as the most popular departure and stopover point for cruise ships in the Mediterranean.
In 2006, 750 cruise liners docked at Civitavecchia, disembarking 1.3 million tourists. Latest figures already register 1.7 million cruise passengers who have arrived at the Lazio region port during 2007. Port authorities expect this to increase to 1.9 million in 2008. Many of these passengers take advantage of the stopover to visit Rome. Local tourist offices, however, have announced that they wish to offer alternative excursions to nearby Etruscan sites or places of interest, such as the Odescalchi Castle at Lake Bracciano, where the actor Tom Cruise celebrated his recent marriage.
The historic port of Civitavecchia is, in itself, a tourist attraction, with the Michaelangelo fortress, commissioned by Pope Julius II, considered one of the finest examples of military architecture in the world.
